What the €5,500 keratopigmentation cost includes
The price is the same for every shade and covers both eyes, including when the procedure is done in two stages. It includes:
- the complete pre-operative consultation and eye examination;
- the procedure itself, performed with a femtosecond laser at the Centre Laser Victor Hugo, 27 bis avenue Victor Hugo, 75116 Paris;
- certified biocompatible medical pigments.
On the day of the procedure, I give you your post-operative prescription, to take to a pharmacy, along with an eye colour change certificate to keep with your passport: when you next renew it, your new eye colour can be shown on it.
Keratopigmentation cost: what makes prices differ between clinics
Prices vary from one clinic and one country to another. Rather than comparing a single figure, it helps to understand what lies behind it and to check what each quote actually covers.
- Technique and equipment. FLAAK keratopigmentation uses a femtosecond laser to create the channel in the cornea where the pigment is placed. The laser and the operating-room environment are a significant part of the keratopigmentation cost.
- Pigments. Certified, sterile, biocompatible pigments made for medical use.
- The surgeon. Training in the technique, experience in corneal and refractive surgery, and who actually performs the examination and the surgery.
- Assessment. A full eye examination before surgery: some quotes include it, others do not.
- Extra pigments and touch-ups. Some clinics charge extra for an additional pigment or for a touch-up. Ask how these are handled before you commit.
- Travel. For patients coming from far away, transport, at least one night in Paris and time off work are part of the real budget.
Questions to ask before comparing quotes
- Is the price for one eye or for both eyes?
- Is the pre-operative examination included?
- Who performs the surgery?
- How are a touch-up or an extra pigment handled?
- What happens to the deposit if the examination shows a contraindication?
A lower keratopigmentation cost is of little use if essential steps are missing, and a higher price does not guarantee a better result. What matters is careful selection of candidates and a qualified surgeon.
Booking: €500 deposit or proof of travel
Your operating slot is confirmed in one of two ways:
- a €500 deposit, deducted from the €5,500 price;
- or proof of travel: a plane or train ticket, or a hotel booking in Paris.
The deposit is refunded in full if your pre-operative examinations reveal a contraindication. If you change your date, it is carried over to the new date. If you cancel, it is not refunded. You can book your date online.
Planned operating sessions in Paris
Dr Gozlan operates during planned operating sessions in Paris, at the Centre Laser Victor Hugo. Dates are announced in advance so that you have time to organise your trip. The first exchange can take place remotely, by WhatsApp or video consultation, and you can send photos of your eyes. A full eye examination always takes place before the procedure. Everything is explained on our page for international patients and patients from other cities.
How long to stay and where to sleep
After the procedure, temporary symptoms are common (discomfort, light sensitivity, watery eyes), so it is advisable to spend at least one night in Paris. Some patients nevertheless fly home a few hours after surgery: Dr Gozlan advises you according to your situation. The Hôtel du Bois Champs-Élysées is opposite the Centre Laser Victor Hugo; you are of course free to choose any accommodation.
Once you are back home
In case of an unusual or urgent symptom (severe pain, reduced vision), contact Dr Gozlan immediately and, if necessary, the nearest eye emergency department.
Is keratopigmentation right for you?
Keratopigmentation is surgery of the cornea and, like any surgery, it carries risks, such as dry eye, glare or infection. Some eye conditions are contraindications, and the minimum age is 18. Read our page on risks and side effects, then take the indicative eligibility test. Final eligibility is decided only at the full ophthalmological examination performed by Dr Gozlan.
